How We Sold Our Home on Facebook Marketplace

It was 2020. We had just come home from long workdays, sitting at the counter in our 1,600 sq ft home, eating dinner with our almost two-year-old. The conversation turned—again—to the future.
We’d always said, “One day, we’ll buy land and build.” But in our late twenties, it felt like a far-off dream. Something for our late thirties… maybe forties. The problem? We were spending more time hoping and wishing than actually planning.
That night, we asked ourselves: Why not start now?
And instead of hiring a realtor, we decided to try something a little unconventional: selling our home on Facebook Marketplace.
Why Facebook Marketplace?
It felt bold (and maybe a little crazy). But with the sheer number of people scrolling Marketplace every day—and the fact we’d seen other “For Sale by Owner” listings there—it seemed worth a shot. Worst case? No one shows up.
1. Stage & Photograph
No fancy photographer here—I used my iPhone. I brightened the images, added contrast, and used the wide-angle feature where it made sense. The key was showing off the layout and making the rooms feel open.
Pro tip: Less is more. Declutter before taking photos and don’t overload your listing with too many images.

2. Set a Price
We researched our area and found comparable homes—similar size, style, and features—to determine our asking price.
3. Write the Description
A good description includes:
Location basics (city, neighborhood, school district)
Square footage
Bedrooms & bathrooms
Lot size (if relevant)
Year built or renovations
Key interior features (kitchen details, flooring, natural light, storage)
Exterior highlights (backyard, garage, curb appeal)
Price
4. Post & Share
We listed on Marketplace, then shared it to our personal pages and encouraged friends/family to do the same. We also scheduled two open house dates, inviting people to come walk through in person. To our surprise… they actually came!
The Outcome
After a whirlwind of conversations, messages, and showings, we found the right buyer. The process was smoother than we imagined, and more personal too.
Handing over the keys was bittersweet—we loved that house. But knowing it was going to someone we trusted made it feel right.

What We Learned
Presentation matters – Good photos and a clear description go a long way.
Be ready to communicate quickly – Marketplace moves fast, and so do buyers.
It’s possible – Yes, you really can sell something as big as a home without the traditional route.
Selling our home on Facebook Marketplace taught us that sometimes thinking outside the box pays off. It was personal, a little unconventional, and ultimately the perfect way to close one chapter and start the next.
